According to 10 TV News in Columbus, Ohio there has been a growing bed bug problem in Franklin County. There have been two major infestations of bed bugs within the county but the Franklin County Board of Health unveiled a task force in hopes that it will decrease the amount of bed bug infestations.

According to an exterminator who lives and works in Ohio, Andrew Christman, business has been extremely busy due to cases of bed bugs. Within a month the company he works for sees around 30 to 40 bed bug cases. Christman expects the cases to double within the next year. 10 TV News reporter Andy Hirsch also mentioned that the Ohio Exterminating Company had nine service calls for Thursday alone.

The Franklin County Board of Health believes that people think bed bugs are caused from being dirty or a poor housekeeper when in fact it has nothing to do with it. That is often why people are embarrassed that they have bed bugs. The board also wants to avoid what is happening in Cincinnati, which is a huge bed bug epidemic. Bed bugs are found everywhere from homes, schools and even fire and police stations.

Bed bugs are often called “hitchhikers” which is why it is extremely important to contact an exterminator right away if you wake up with bites or spot a bed bug in your home. Bed bugs can multiply extremely quickly which in turn cases a greater risk of spreading bed bugs to other parts of your home or having guests bring bed bugs back to their homes. Luckily bed bugs don’t cause any diseases but their bites are noted as extremely itchy and in some cases painful. Scratching may also cause and infection.

Though exterminators on the east side of Franklin County have reported to gain control over bed bugs experts still agree the overall problem is going to get progressively worse unless something else is done.

It’s awful reading about everyone who has/is suffering from bedbugs. My family and I lease an apartment in North Columbus and are suffering from them. Luckily we have wonderful landlords and as soon as I informed them it was a matter of minutes I received a call from the exterminator to set up an initial inspection. I couldn’t imagine scramming to come up with the amount of money to properly handle the situation. Thank you John and R&S Reality.

Don’t move to forest creek apartments. I believe they lied to me and told me they didn’t have a bed bug infestation because I now have them!

What they should do Lee is prepare their employees by training them about the growing bed bug problem and how to prevent, and treat, a bed bug infestation.

I’m a home health worker. My clients on the East side of Columbus have had bed bug infestations several times. Then the workers in the client’s homes took them home, now they have them!! Covenant House is the company who services these MRDD group homes! Too cheap to pay for the group homes to be treated, until EVERYONE has them! Shame on you!

I live in Piqua, Ohio. I moved into a nice home in March. I noticed right away that there were dead cockroaches all over my kitchen. I cleaned the mess up because the landlord said that it was my responsibility. The tenants who moved out were very unsanitary people. Approximately two weeks into my stay, I had a guest who noticed a bed bug. I called my landlord immediately and she claimed that I have a bug problem in my head. The exterminator came out three days later and stated that there were no bed bugs. Now it is the end of May and my father is visiting from out of town and slept on my couch. He woke up with bites all over his body. I inspected the couch and sure enough there were bed bugs. Now I have to tell the landlord again in which she has already told me that she is tired of my complaining. It is now the beginning of June and I have noticed them in all rooms of my house. Bed bugs can live in an empty dwelling for over a year without food. I believe that these bugs were here before me. I came from an apartment complex that treated the apartments on a quarterly basis. I have never had a problem with any type of bug. I have been treating the problem myself with a white powder that can be found at a lawn and garden store. This stuff is called Diatomaceous Earth and a raid spray that is primarily for bed bugs. My landlord said not to use this stuff and that the exterminator has to find live bugs in order to treat. I have a few samples to give her, but the landlord said that I am not to collect samples and that they have to be spotted crawling on my belongings. I am hoping that this exterminator can successfully rid me of these bugs. I am afraid that she is not going to be able to do so, since they are in my entire house. This situation really scares me. I am afraid that if we do get rid of them completely that they will just come back by someone else who has them. If anyone can advise me on how to make sure that these things can be eliminated from my house successfully, please let me know. I am willing to use any product. I really want to move, but I know that is not an option because I will bring them with me. I have also heard of several other cases of bed bugs in my town. I believe that this is a crisis and it will only get worse. Something needs to be done about this problem.

My daughter lives in Pine Crossing Apts and reported bed bugs, her maintenance office advised her since she reported the problem she can be responsible to pay for the whole building to be treated. Is this legal ? Or are they taking advantage of her. She has requested to relocate to a different building several times due to the unsantitary conditions of her neighbors .

  18. Melissa Moore says:

147 NORTH POWELL AVE. Its a double up for rent. Neighbor in other half had infested couch. 147 had 5 bugs “found” god knows how many more. We had to leave ALL furniture even gave some to same neighbor. Landlord hired bugman. He brought spray and 4 cans of bedlam. I saw a baby crawling on mirror that shares wall to other half of double. These apartments or not clear of bugs as of 8/20/2010.

  19. Tam says:

If you lived in the apartment prior to the bed bug infestation, it’s not the landlords responsibility to pay for the extermination. Since Columbus is invested with them, you could get them on your clothes, in your car, in your purse, on your shoes, etc, simply by shopping at a department store or sitting in a waiting room. You don’t notice them on your clothes if you’re not looking as they try to hide in the folds of the clothing or fabric. They are very difficult to eliminate and will require an exterminator with the permits to use the required pesticides.

me and my family just recently moved into these apartments in Columbus Ohio. we’ve been living here for a couple of months now and noticed bites on us. after researching our situation we’ve come to find out that ABBEY LANE APT. IN COLUMBUS OHIO ARE INFESTED WITH BEDBUGS. we’ve lived here before a couple of times but never found any. oh well i suggest buying a bedbug spray and spraying your house down especially the ceilings and creases behind frames, if your house is infested throw away your bed, they live inside it. i would suggest buying a blowup bed until you move out. unfortunately we have to stay and not break our lease, meanwhile doing everything we can to kill the the culprits. good luck everyone!

I read through some of the landlord/tenant laws on Ohio.gov. A landlord is required to “Comply with the requirements of all applicable building, housing, health, and safety codes that materially affect health and safety”, but details of those requirements are linked to and I didn’t feel like reading them all.

If you feel that your landlord is not following the law you must submit in writing a letter to them stating so. They have 30 days to remedy the issue. If they do not, you can basically either deposit your rent in an escrow account with the county clerk until the problem is taken care of or terminate the rental agreement.

All of these will likely lead to small claims court so be sure to document everything if you are going to take any of these steps.

    Laws are here http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/5321.04

Abbots Cove apartments on the westside of columbus….DO NOT RENT!! My neighbors apartment was infested with them. They came and sprayed mine yesterday and found nothing. I found one live one last night after they sprayed. The crazy things you have to do to get rid of them. I’m so sore today it’s ridiculous. Best part of it all. They will be back in 2 weeks to do it again. I’m hoping we caught them early enough.

They are hichickers and they can live in your car. My experience with them isnt pleasent, my girl and I consider eveyone a supect of carrying bedbugs. Nobody can enter without checking there cloths and shoes. If you havent had them I would advise you be the same way with those who come to your place of residance.

Bed bugs infestation is a severe problem in Columbus, Ohio- According to reports we have the highest infestation in the United States. I work in residential property management and have had to deal with several units that were infested withi bed bugs in the past- it seriously is nothing to joke around with. It is imperative that you have the unit professionally treated by an exterminator. There is a list of things you need to do in order to have your home fully prepped for treatment. Granted it is very time consuming, but without properly prepping your home, the treatment will not take full affect.

  25. Brian says:

Ten foot ceiling investments, apts at 800 leawood drive PLEASE DONT RENT FROM THEM, they have a major problem of bed bugs and their owner won’t do nothing about it, they tell people here to deal with it, spend your money on that, He says he doesn’t have time for bugs. He has time to get his rent tho first of the month.

  26. Jim says:

    Hi Justeen,

I would stay away from that insecticide, especially if it’s not approved!

Best bet for killing bed bugs is bed bug dust (food grade diatomaceous earth) which you can pick at most feed and supply stores. It is not harmful, inexpensive and works great!

  27. justeen says:

I heard on the news that this stuff called “250 propoxur residual insecticide” is the best stuff to get rid of bed bugs. but the EPA wont approve it for use by companies. but you can still buy it yourself.

The warning on it was it may cause neurological issues in kids. I’m not sure if there is a duration of time for the rosin, but I’m sure if you have bed bugs, then anyone is willing to try.
